Goal: This study aims to identify the key barriers affecting Digital Transformation (DT) in the Pakistan Perishable Food Supply Chain (PFSC) and to develop the contextual relationship between the identified barriers.
Design/Methodology/Approach: This research adopted a hybrid approach, including qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In a qualitative section, potential barriers were identified through an extensive literature review and expert judgement. In the quantitative section, all identified barriers were analyzed using Total Interpretive Structural Modeling (TISM). Furthermore, Fuzzy-MICMAC (Matrice d'Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliquée à un Classement) was applied to categorize the barriers into four groups: independent, linkage, autonomous, and dependent, based on their driving and dependence powers.
Results: The analysis reveals that lack of support, lack of reward and recognition, poor IT infrastructure, and high investment and maintenance costs exert a severe impact on the system. These barriers are the primary elements hindering the DT process, while other barriers pose a relatively minor role.
Limitations of the investigation: Due to the subjectivity of the respondents, particularly those from Pakistan’s PFSC, the findings of this research may not be generalized.
Implications: The study outcomes help Food Supply Chain (FSC) experts prioritize these barriers to ensure a seamless DT. This research also contributes to the existing body of knowledge by proposing a hybrid methodology that incorporates TISM and Fuzzy MICMAC. Further, the study results can be replicated across different sectors and regions.
Originality/value: The originality of this study lies of the TISM approach, which enables field experts to identify barriers and plan strategies for their elimination.
